And guess what: half the fun comes with finding these unique and sometimes stunning items. You'll be getting the real deal and having fun in the process. Let the treasure hunt begin!
You may have certain items in mind: a certain kind of purse, hat, jewelry or shirt. I'll be mentioning various resources that may lead you from broad to narrow results. I'll tell you how I think you can find these resources to find your vintage items and then the rest is up to you. You'll need to remember that vintage sizes run smaller - people were smaller back then. So if you are searching for vintage clothing items in particular, keep this in mind.
Finding your treasures:
Salvation Army or Goodwill - These have always been one of the best and most economical ways to find vintage items. You can try them on (some SA's have dressing rooms) and the prices are usually very good. Look for sale days where different tag colors are 50% off. You'll save even more. You can find Salvation Army locations in your local phone book or even on your GPS unit if you have one. I have discovered Salvation Army locations I had never known existed.
Church Sales - These can be found in your neighborhood. Check out your local Penny Saver paper or classifieds. The prices are typically very good. You can find some of the best treasures here as people share the wares in their attics, etc.
Craigslist.com - If you know what you are looking for, you can find some great deals on Craigslist. Know what you are going after and don't be afraid to dicker. Prices are pretty flexible most times in this venue.
Estate Sales or Garage Sales - Check your local paper and be prepared to make the rounds. You may find vintage items looking for a new home. Estate Sales are usually ripe with great finds, garage sales are a little more touch and go.
eBay - If you are looking for a specific item (a certain kind of shirt or purse, etc) eBay is the way to go. You can find all sorts of vintage clothing options on eBay and you can find some great deals. Do your homework and try to understand what you are buying and the sizes offered. If the listings don't mention measurements...ask for them. Typically items are final sales.
Hunting for vintage clothing items can be a lot of fun. You can be assured of finding unique items that express who you are. There are many ways to find those special items that will someday fill your closet. You can also be content in knowing you are giving some great quality items a second life span. How cool is that!
